Our Children

We care for our children in a girls house and a boys house on our own property. We take care of their needs. Each day we give them the chance to lead a life with a future. Get to know our children and find out how simple it is to support us!

  • Aisha

    Aisha

update 2012: she's becoming more grown up. Being at the boarding school and away from the
orphanage is making her feel more responsible. We are excited to see how she develops at
    secondary school.

Mwanaisha, whom we all call Aisha, is HIV-negative. She had lived with us in the Kijitonyama
House since the beginning of 2001. Aisha is an orphan. She lived with relatives in a mud hut.
Aisha’s needs were neither recognized nor met. She was the last to be cared for and the last to
be given attention. She has adapted well since then with the help of the other children and is an
extremely bright, lively girl. Aisha is one of the proudest Tanzanian students :-)

  • Daudi

    Daudi

In the meantime (2012), Daudi has settled into life at the orphanage and puts his best foot forward
at school. Daudi often plays with Eriki as they are both around the same age. Daudi often jokes
around and is always a bit too loud but is very loveable all the same.

Daudi is 5 years old and has been living with us since summer 2010. Daudie los both of his
parents. His father was killed by a mine accident in Tonduru. His mother died because of a snake
bite during fielt work in 2008. Daudi has a 7 year old brother La Tifa. For the last 2 years his aunt
took care of both of them.

  • Done

    Done

Done came to us together with Gideon in October 2008. He is 9 years old and comes form the Mukaranga region. Both of his parents are dead.
Done is a quiet boy and physically weak yet. He comes from a very bad background. Where he lived before was no bedding, poor clothing and regular meals were often a problem.
He is eager to learn. We are happy to have him!

  • Eliza

    Eliza

She is at a boarding school at secondary level in Mtwara together with Aisha, Jacky, Yohanna
    and Peter.

Eliza is an orphan and HIV-negative. She is Monica’s little sister. Both of their parents died
within a year of AIDS. The children were sent on to distant relatives, as is often the case in
    Tanzania.
Eliza lived with her sister and 6 relatives in a small, one-room hut. We were told about the girls
when neighbours turned to us to tell us about how poorly the girls were treated by their aunt.
Eliza had never been to school so she attended the Kindergarten. Today she also attends
school like all of the other children.

  • Eric

    Eric

Erik lives with us since January 2010. His mother died in childbirth, his father is unknown. A native sponsor of the local church community supported him by donating milk for the first 2 years. After that, Erik’s grandmother tried to keep their heads above water by little jobs. His grandmother became old and weak; she was delighted to leave Erik with us. Erik goes to the missionary kindergarten in our village.

  • Ezekia

    Ezekia

Ezekia is 9 years old and has been living in our main orphanage in Kijitonyama since the beginning of October 2007. He is HIV negative. Together with his brother Yohana, he had lived after the death of his mother at his aunt's, who could not look after them. He and his brother were "deported" to an orphanage in the Kibaha region. Conditions were very bad there. They did not have enough to eat. Early October 2007 he came to us to Kijitonyama. Since the summer of 2009 he has finally been living together with his brother, who had been at the Mbagala house. Like his brother, he is very bright and intelligent. He is very happy to live with his brother in the boys house, now.

  • Furaha

    Furaha

Finished school in 2012. She wants to become a teacher and we will make it possible fpr her to
train the Montessori Teachers Training Colleg in Mtwara.

Furaha means Happiness. Her real name is Osimunde but up to now we have not found out
how she got that name. It is her secret. She is a very happy child and she likes to help
    Mama Eva in the house.

  • Gideon

    Gideon

Gideon is one of the children, who we have been supporting since January 2008 by financing there school education at Temba’s „Lifewaylight Educare Center“. Since October he lives with us in our new house and we take care of him.
Gideon is 8 years old. He comes form the Mukaranga region. His parents are both dead. Before he came to us he lived with his uncle’s family under very bad conditions. He was treated unbelievably badly.
Gideon is very friendly and good at school, especially in English. We are very happy that he is with us now!

  • Jackline

    Jackline

Jackline is 10 or 11 years of age and currently attends the 4th grade. She has been with us since January 2006 with her younger sister Veronika. Her mother lost her life due to a car accident in West Tanzania, her father died of AIDS 3 years ago. Over the last 3 years her life has been a passing on to friends, acquaintances, and neighbors. Now she is with us at the girls house.

  • Joshua

    Joshua

update 2012: He is and always will be our heartthrob and is currently in the last year of his
apprenticeship in the south-west of the country. Once he is finished, we will have to find him an
    internship in a garage.

Joshua is HIV-negative and an orphan. His father has been dead for some time and his mother
died in the summer of 2002 from AIDS. Joshua lived with his grandparents, who could not feed or
care for him or the other children. He has been here since April 2003 and is Mashaka’s best
friend. Joshua is charming, quiet, very attentive and friendly. At present, he is in his first year of
apprenticeship. He is a carpenter trainee at MEC.

  • La Tifa

    La Tifa

La Tifa came to us together with Daudi. She was born in 2001 and was raised by her aunt for the last couple of years. She is an orphan. It is very hard to teach her in anything. For example, she does not accept any other spelling of her name. The T has to be capitalized. She never went to school before she came to us. She is a adorable girl and is liked be everybody.

  • Lulu

    Lulu

update 2012: our first student! She wants to become a social worker for us in 2 years and
goes to the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy (MNMA). In the first year, she has to work for
her certificate in Zanzibar. She will then come back to Daressalam. We wish her every success!

Lulu Joseph, the oldest girl in Kijitonyama is HIV-negative and is in the same school class as
Joshua. She comes from an extremely poor home. Her father died early and her mother, who
took care of several children didn’t have the time or money to take care of Lulu as well. Lulu has
been living with us since October 2000. She is the oldest girl and helps her foster mother quite a
bit. Lulu is a very good student and wants to be a doctor when she’s grown up.

  • Mahamudu

    Mahamudu

A new arrival in 2012. Mahamudu has been a part of our family since January 2012. He is four
years old. For a long time, he lived with his aunt, four cousins and his brother in a very small mud
hut. He was not used to wearing shoes and he had open wounds on his feet. When he first
arrived, we had to pull a worm out of his toe. His mother and father both died of HIV in 2010. He is
a very happy and lively child. He quickly settled into life with us and is quick to help out.

  • Malkea

    Malkea

Malkea has been an orphan child since 2005. She lives with her aunt, who has to take care for 5 children, under very poor circumstances. She is a Massai girl and is used to sleeping without a mattress on loamy soil in her hut. She never went to school. Since January 2009, she has been living with us and has settled in within a very short time. Malkea is always barefoot; she is very close to nature, vigorously and friendly.

  • Mercy

    Mercy

Mercy is three years old and the youngest of our kids. She came to us in the beginning of March in 2011. She lived on the streets with her mentally disturbed mother. She did not have a constant sleeping-place and regular meals. She is used to be surrounded by many strangers; this is why she is very open and has no fears of contact. This also made the start at out place easier for her; she was comfortable form the beginning. Now she has her own bed and regular meals. Although she gets enough to eat, she still hurries. She likes to play with children but sometimes she prefers to stay alone and nobody knows what she is thinking. Mercy is the first child for us that is no complete orphan. Her mothers request for help received us by the social security office of the town district. We are searching for a sponsor for Mercy!

  • Meshek

    Meshek

Living outside the orphanage together with Said since 2012. The two of them have their own room
in the neighbouring Mbagala district and live there by themselves. Meshek is finished with his
apprenticeship to become a car mechanic. However, in Tanzania, graduates are not simply
taken on but have to gain practical experience first. It is extremely difficult to find a job. In spite of
this, he has managed to obtain regular unpaid work in a workshop. He is strong-willed and wants
to marry his girlfriend of many years. He and Said often come home at the weekends.

  • Nuhu

    Nuhu

Nuhu is an orphan. Last, she lived with his 75-year old grandfather, who had to take care of another 11 children. Nuhu never went to school and was completely undernourished and sick when she came to us. Meanwhile she is doing a lot better.

  • Peter

    Peter

He has been going to secondary school with four of his siblings since 2012. Like Yohanna, he
was one of the best at the orphanage and we are excited to see whether he can stay at this level.

Peter is an orphan and HIV-negative. When his parents died, he remained alone in town. No one
took care of him and he was forced to fend for himself alone on the streets by begging for money
or stealing so that he could eat. Peter now attends Kindergarten every day and has made many
friends. Our youngest boy at the former Mbagala house is like the sunshine – friendly and always
beaming! Peter has been here since January 2004.

  • Prisca

    Prisca

Prisca has lost her entire family during the last couple of years. Her mother passed away 2 years ago. Her father who was a soldier and died last year. Also Prisca’s twin sister is not alive anymore, she passed away only 6 months after she was born. Last, Prisca lived with her aunt, who took care of Prisca’s father. After the death of her father, the aunt was not able to take care of the child, because she was unemployed. This is the reason why we accommodated Prisca at our house. Now, she goes to the missionary kindergarten in the same village. We are happy to give her a new home and the possibility of a school education.

  • Rajabu

    Rajabu

A NEW arrival in 2012. Rajabu, who is six or seven years old, has been with us since January
2012. Just like Shamira und Mahamudu, he also comes from the Mkuranga region. His father was
eaten by a crocodile while out fishing. When his mother died from an illness in 2010, his uncle
looked after him as his blind grandmother could not take care of him anymore. His family were
glad that we took Rajabu into our family. He is a very shy little boy at the moment and is still
getting used to his new surroundings. He goes to our nursery school in the village.

  • Saada

    Saada

Saada is about 7 years old. She is a happy and outspoken girl. She grew up under very poor circumstances
with her relatives in a small village in the outback. She came to us with nothing more than her dress that she
was wearing. Now, she goes to primary-school. She enjoys studying very much although she lacks of concentration.
She is very comfortable in her new home. She loves to joke around and play with small stones together with her siblings.

  • Said

    Said

working as an electrician since 2012 - however, it is difficult to find jobs. It was particularly difficult
for him to leave our house. Life is hard and has not been as good to him as when he was with us
in the orphanage. He sees to the production of our charcoal, which we make ourselves using
leaves from trees, and is looking for another job at the same time.

Said is an orphan and HIV-negative. He has been here since January 2002. His mother died of
AIDS at the end of 2001. He doesn’t know who his father is. Said lived with his grandfather
together with other children. His grandpa couldn’t care for him, neither regular meals nor attending
school were possible. Said is particularly shy and needs special attention and more care than the
other boys. He is happy to finally be able to go to MEC. He, Meshek, Joshua, and Onesmo are
    carpenter trainees there.

  • Sayuni

    Sayuni

update 2012: our "super nice guy". As a boy from the Massai tribe, Sayuni knows how to treat
animals with respect, always helps out without being asked, is charming and takes care of our
    goats and dogs!

Sayuni is 8 years old and belongs to the tribe of the Massai. His parents presumably died from
HIV. He still has two brothers. All of them never went to school. Before Sayuni came to us, he
lived with his uncle, who has to take care of 9 children of his own.

  • Sayuni Massai

    Sayuni Massai

Sayuni is 8 years old and belongs to the tribe of the Massai. His parents presumably died from HIV. He still has two brothers. All of them never went to school. Before Sayuni came to us, he lived with his uncle, who has to take care of 9 children of his own.

  • Shamira

    Shamira

A NEW arrival in 2012. She came to us in January 2012 when she was four years old. She comes
from a small village in the Mkuranga region; Rajabu and Mahamudu also come from this area. Her
father died young and she lived together with her mother in poor conditions until her mother was
cursed and died in 2010. After her mother's death, Shamira lived together with her grandmother,
her brother and four other relatives in a very small hut. However, her grandmother was not able to
feed both children and the hut was much too small. The village elder brought this family to our
attention and Shamira's grandmother was grateful to us for taking Shamira into the orphanage.
She is very eager to learn, open and friendly and quickly made friends with our other children at
    the orphanage.

  • Theresia

    Theresia

Theresia, a Masai girl, was 7 years old, when she came to us in 2010. She lost her father in 2003 and her mother in 2005. After that she lived with her grandfather in the outback, but he was not able to take care of her basic needs. Masai children of poor families get married very early. They rarely get the chance to receive a school education and medical treatment.

  • Veronica

    Veronica

update 2012: she has made a lot of progress over the past year and increasingly takes on the
role of her older sister Jackie, who goes to a secondary school in Mtwara, among her siblings at
    the orphanage.

Veronica is 9 years of age and started school beginning of 2006. Like her older sister Jackline
she has no parents any more and no home. She is upbeat and has felt comfortable already after
her first week at the Mbagala home. Her uncle had not adequately taken care of her and her
sister during the last 3 years. He had not been able to sufficiently provide for them.

  • Victoria

    Victoria

Victoria was born in the summer of 2002 and since the beginning of September 2009 she has lived with us. Her father died in a tragic accident on a river, where he was attacked and killed by a crocodile. Victoria’s mother brought her to her sister in law, before she disappeared out of there lives. She has not been seen for 6 years now. Victoria’s aunt has 4 children on her own. In the beginning, she tried to sell cookies in the village to feed her family, but she failed. A short time ago, she disappeared, too. Lastly, Victoria lived with her aunt in a hut made out of mud in very poor circumstances. It was told to us, that she started to ask people for money. This behaviour bares a great risk of sexual abuse. It was the right time for Victoria to find a safe and loving home.

  • Yohana

    Yohana

Johanna has been going to secondary school with four of his siblings since 2012. He was one of the
best at school while at the orphanage and we are excited to see how he develops.

  • Zainabu

    Zainabu

Zainabu is 6 years old. She came to us with Saada in January, 2011. Her parents passed away, so she grew up at her grandmother’s. Zainabu is a calm, gentle girl. You never know what is on her mind. She enjoys showering every day and she takes care of the cleanness of her cloths. She goes to pre-school, where she found new friends easily.
